Held in high regard by the Vikings, Angelica is an herb from antiquity that has been used as a food source as well as a medicinal herb. During the Bubonic Plague that swept across Europe during the mid 1600's, the name Angelica or Holy Ghost Plant was given to angelica achangelica by a monk who said an angel identified it in a dream as the cure for the plague. Subsequently, Angelica became a core ingredient along with nutmeg and treacle as a treatment for those suffering from the plague. This concoction was dubbed “The King’s Majesty’s Excellent Recipe for the Plague". This medicinal potion was to be taken twice a day so long as symptoms persisted, and the prescription was published by the Royal College of Physicians in the U.K. Angelica is a biennial herb that can reach heights of 7-8 feet in optimal conditions and grows well in moist fertile soil.
