Anise is sweet and very aromatic spice. Many liquors have been made with Anise with one of the most famous being anisette. Anise is also commonly used to flavor herbal teas and confectionaries such as black jellybeans as well as other European confections. In addition to food and beverage applications, several historic medicinal and magickal uses abound around this tasty herb. In ancient Egypt, anise was utilized for diuretic and gastro-intestinal soothing properties, in the days of ancient Rome, this widely grown herb was of such value that the Romans were able to use the Anise seed to pay their taxes. In ancient Greece, many scholars assigned their own use for the herb. Pythagoras described the use of anise as a remedy to treat epilepsy, whereas Hippocrates suggested Anise be used as a cough suppressant. Pliny the Elder said it was best used to stave off halitosis. Anise is a mainstay herb in the cottage garden. Old world 'witches' supposedly used Anise to ward off the evil eye or detection of the craft and also be used to "throw dogs off your scent" if you were being hunted. Anise is steeped deep in European and middle eastern culture and history.
