Aztec Tobacco also known as Wild Tobacco, is a species of tobacco that has been used for millennia by various North and South American indigenous peoples / tribes to include, most famously, the Aztecs. Aztec Tobacco was known as “picietl” in Nahuatl (the prevalent language of the Aztecs) and the word translates into ‘little perfume” which denotes the highly fragrant blooms of this species. Aztec Tobacco was an important medicinal and ceremonial crop for the Aztecs and was used in the treatment of such ailments as headaches, snake and spider bites as well as gastric disorders. Aztec Tobacco was so prevalent in use, that it was listed and depicted in two historic texts, The Badianus Manuscript and Florentine Codex, Book XI. Today, Aztec Tobacco is utilized most often as a natural pesticide. Nicotiana rustica contains about 9 times more nicotine than Nicotiana tabacum (common smoking tobacco) and should be considered poisonous and therefore grown with care.
