Comfrey is also known as boneset or knitbone and has been in cultivation since antiquity. Comfrey is native to Europe and Asia. Comfrey was for historically used treat bruises, sprains, and fractures. Today, comfrey herbal use is limited to topical applications only due to possible liver toxicity. Comfrey is a clump forming perennial that produces multiple tiny purple bell-shaped flowers that are borne on stalks that arch up and out of the dense dark green habit. Comfrey is a bee and butterfly nectar source. Comfrey is an excellent, low maintenance planting for the historic garden or wild scape.
