Lemon Balm is also known as Melissa. Lemon Balm has been historically used as a mild sedative, anxiolytic, and to improve memory for centuries. Lemon Balm use was first mentioned in writing by Theophrastus in his work, Historia Plantarum Book 9 (aprx.300BC). Today, Lemon Balm can be found in many commercial herbal teas. Lemon Balm is a bushy perennial herb that resembles mint in appearance but produces an invigorating lemon scent when the leaves are crushed. The aromatic and flavorful foliage of Lemon Balm can be used to make refreshing beverages or can be added to soups or salad oils to impart a tangy citrus flavor. Lemon Balm flowers are tiny white and overall inconspicuous but they are found to be particularly attractive to bees, thus giving rise to Lemon Balm's other common name, Bee Balm.
