White horehound is a plant steeped in historic use dating back to at least the first century B.C. The Roman medical recorder and most likely physician, Celsus included horehound as an entry in his Treatise De Medicina (aprx 100BC), which touted the use of White horehound for respiratory ailments. White horehound is sweet and has a very distinct flavor that has given rise to horehound beer, horehound tea, and the rock and rye cocktail. Today, both recipes and manufactures still utilize White horehound as the main ingredient for throat lozenges and "old-fashioned" hard candies.
