Scopolia luridus is known by the common name, Asian Belladonna or Himalayan Scopolia and is indigenous to the Himalayas of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Historically, the roots and seeds were used by the people of Tibet medicinally for alleviating pain and spasms. It became of widespread use as a mandrake substitute in the Old World. Himalayan Scopolia was first described in 1824 by Sprengel in the publication, ‘Systema vegetabilium’, He used the synonym Nicandra anomala which has continued to cause identification confusion.
