Common Name: Cotton Leaf Passionflower Vine AKA Corona de Cristo – Passiflora foetida var. gossypifolia
Latin Name: Passiflora foetida var. gossypifolia
Seed Count: 10 Seeds Per Packet
Cotton Leaf Passionfruit is a very ornate vine that boasts lilac-colored characteristically frilly passionflower blooms en-mass upon 3 to 6-foot vines. As a main larval host for Gulf Fritillary butterflies, this species is a valuable Texas native that can tolerate semi-arid conditions but thrives where there is moisture. As the second wave of dainty decor, the blooms give way to bright RED fruits that are surrounded by stark green cage-like bracts. Scientists believe the bracts are used by the plant to thwart insects attempting to eat at the developing fruit. It is unknown if the plant actually ingests or obtains nourishment from trapped insects or if the bugs simply die from being trapped (note fly caught in the picture above). The fruit from this species is mild and sweet and the skins are thin and spongy allowing for a much easier munching experience. The red-fruited variety is rarely available. Harvested Oct 2021. Limited 2022 stock.
